Maruyama Course, May 25th-27th at Burwell, Cambs

This year Quentin Cooke with ‘Aikido for Daily Life’ will be hosting a seminar taught by Sensei Koretoshi Maruyama. He is the founder of Yuishinkai International. He was one of the founder’s uchideshi, and then studied under Tohei Sensei, where he was president of the Ki Society.

There are not that many seminars that really try and encourage students from across the aikido world to come together and just practice. In the words of Sensei Koretoshi Maruyama;

'Every river has a name. However, these names disappear when they flow into the great ocean. Aikido has many styles, many names, but Aikido is Aikido. It is my vision and hope that, like the rivers , they flow together and unite as one.'

This is a rare opportunity to meet someone who trained under Ueshiba and who can tell you how it actually was.

When:
25th May- 26th May and 27th may

Starting time:
Anticipated start 10.30, 4 hours training each day.

Venue:
Burwell Sports Centre, Buntings Path, Burwell, Cambs, CB25 0DD.

International AIki Peace Week,15th September in Dudley, West Midlands

Aiki Extensions logo

This course is open to all and celebrates the opening of International Aiki Peace Week, an initiative coming from Aiki extensions to promote and celebrate peace. This is an event aimed at all associations and all styles and will be a celebration of what we share and not what divides us.

The course will not be run on traditional grounds, and whilst a good number of high ranking teachers will be in attendance, none will take a lead role. Over the day, you will get to experience short slots from many teachers rather a long one from one. There will also be slots designed to specifically encourage attendees to share their knowledge with participants from an alternative style, and vice versa.

The aims

To celebrate the message of aikido and to gain a deeper understanding of how aikido can be used to make a more peaceful world.

To educate, motivate and inspire as well as having fun, whilst generating money for a good cause.

Date and Time

Saturday Sept 15th, 11-00am to 5-00pm

Cost

£25 for adults, £10 children, unemployed and pensioners

Valid Insurance required

(All funds raised will support Aiki Extensions an international organisation- and a registered charity in the USA.

The Venue

Renshinkan Dojo:
Curson House
265/6
Castle Street
Dudley
DY1 1LQ

General Information

You will notice that there are no lead teachers. It will be a very organic process and the aim is to get teachers attending to take short slots. They will represent different styles, associations and places. The brief will be to teach an aspect of aikido that demonstrates how aikido can bring about peace. The day will be very much about philosophy, rather than any particular technique. I’d also hope to encourage teachers to speak a little bit about why they are passionate about aikido and what difference they think it can make to the world at large.

• The day will start with a teacher demonstrating a technique. People will practice that for a few minutes and then the teacher will tap literally anyone of any grade on the shoulder and they will show a technique and so on
• Aikidoka will be paired by grade, e.g 1st dan to 1st dan from different associations. The idea will be that the one shows a technique to the other and then the partner will show their version of it.
• Senior grades will be paired with junior grades, again from different associations and the senior grade will teach a technique on a one to one basis.
• Please bring your own lunch.

The whole idea is to make everyone feel that they have participated and shared in something a bit different and maybe to see that what we share in the aikido world as a whole is much more than the differences that seem to divide us.
